Her story arc was left in the capable hands of Abrams, by Director Rian Johnson after the talented actress died in December 2016. She passed shortly after wrapping up work on the “The Last Jedi”.

Abrams said in a statement: “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us.”

“With the blessing from her daughter, Billie, we found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.” He went on to say recasting the critical role was never an option.

With an additional tease that’s sure to jump fans into hyper-drive, the announcement also confirmed that Billy Dee Williams will be returning as Lando Calrissian.

Filming and production is reportedly scheduled to begin Wednesday at London’s Pinewood Studios. The working title is simply “Episode IX” and is slated to hit theaters December 2019.
