3 Of The Greatest: Deadpool, Green Lantern, Daredevil

Deadpool

AKA: Wade Wilson. The Merc With A Mouth. The trash talking, mutant answer to Spidey, from the costume to the colors.

It should come as no surprise when Deadpool appeared on the scene in 1991 the Rob Liefeld/Fabian Nicieza creation rapidly become a fan fav.

This reluctant hero started life as a villain. An outlandish Marvel character that’s insane as he is brilliantly funny. In many a panel he even acknowledges he’s in a comic-book. In 1997 this chimichanga lovin’ anti -hero was given an exclusive title that was later canceled in 2002.

Deadpool first appeared in The New Mutants #98 (cover-dated February 1991).

While any team would be lucky to have him, he counts himself a member of X-Force and was part of and the Thunderbolts.

Did You Know? His real name is a joke! When Deadpool was developed, he looked glaringly similar to DC’s Deathstroke. So much so, his creators decided to name him Wade Wilson. An inside joke implying that he’s “related” to Deathstroke…Slade Wilson.

Green Lantern

Many fans are under the impression the bold test pilot Hal Jordan had the ‘power ring’ before anyone else. However, The Green Lantern (Allan Scott) had a magic ‘power ring’ before our pal Hal was given his.

Being passed on by a dying alien accepting the great green ring meant being recruited in a corps of space cops run by the Guardians of the Universe.

Much like every cool device the ring needed charging. When juiced up Green Lantern could conjure and project any green objects you can imagine as well as the power of flight and time travel.

And let’s not forget the oath: “In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight, let those who worship evil’s might, beware my power… Green Lantern’s light!”

Did You Know? The 1940s version of Green Lantern wasn’t able to use his abilities against wood. And had a sidekick that was a starfish called Itty.

Daredevil

Created in the mid-1960’s by Stan n’ Jack Daredevil was one of the first gritty and dirty superheroes. Being based in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, he was a string of contradictions: attorney by day while law breaking vigilante by night, devout Catholic in a devil costume.

Frank Miller gained notoriety working on the character. Prestige the likes of Kevin Smith and Brian Michael Bendis have taken on the billy club touting crime crusader.

Did You Know? The man himself, Stan Lee stated Daredevil’s Radar Sense is better than Spiderman‘s Spider-Sense.

Whats makes Murdock’s radar so lethal? Without concentrating he can see 150 yards in 360 degrees. Imagine what he can do if he was concentrating?!

Need more comics…Who wins…Wolverine or Black Panther?! Claws take on claws.
